EMDR

EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, is a psychotherapy created in 1987 by the American psychologist and behavioural therapist Francine Shapiro, and recognised internationally by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

EMDR is based on the idea that unresolved trauma can cause psychological and physical symptoms. During an EMDR session, the therapist asks the patient to concentrate on a traumatic memory while following alternating bilateral sensory stimulations, often eye movements. Bilateral sensory stimulation enables communication between the right and left brains, reprogramming the painful memory to reduce its emotional charge.

The role of the first assessment session is to lay the foundations for a relationship of trust between the therapist and the person consulting the therapist, and to discuss the reason for consulting the therapist (the target), the next steps (the protocol), a short ‘test’ to prepare the ground, contraindications, etc.

Note: EMDR is not recommended for pregnant women, people suffering from certain neurological diseases, schizophrenia, epilepsy, stroke or who are in social isolation.

The advantages of EMDR :
– Speed: EMDR can produce faster results than traditional therapies;
– Durability: the beneficial effects of EMDR are often long-lasting;
– Drug-free: EMDR does not involve the use of medication, which avoids side effects.
